Moving Boxes
  • Start as early as you can. The more time you have for preparing for your move, the better.
  • In this case treat time as a friend and it will serve you.
  • Distribute the weight evenly as much as possible between the boxes. If they are two heavy they could break when you carry them and it may not be very healthy for your pack either. Another option is to use plastic container moving boxes. They are stronger and you could rent them. That way no spending money for boxes and no searching for how to get rid of them afterwards.
  • Begin packing room by room. When you fill up a box place a label or write with a marker to which room it belongs. It saves time with unpacking.
  • Plan the time and get help for the loading of the truck. Try to figure based on what’s to move and the way to the truck how much time you will need. Think this through. If you have stairs or an elevator to go through moving your stuff out may be more time consuming than usual. This means that if you can you should consider using extra help. It may be hiring labor or a couple of friends that are free on moving day. Remember that you are paying movers by the hour.
  • Get rid of what you don’t need in time. You can use Craigslist, Freecycle, eBay, Amazon – so many places online that will take what you don’t want to keep. You can also use these places to supply yourself with packing materials like boxes.
  • Deal with the bills. Before you move out remember to check that all bills and the rent are paid until the moving out date. Pick up things you have left to be repaired or at the drycleaners. Also, look for utility companies in the area where you are relocating to.
  • Make an “open first” box. It may sound like an extra effort but it is worth it. Place in it some basic things – plates, knives and other cutlery, toilet paper, soap, towels, clothes for 1 – 2 days, bedsheets, etc. Once you are at your new home you may be too tired to begin unpacking the whole set of boxes and bags, especially if you have moved a large house and you are with your partner and your kids. Place in the box your children’s favorite toys and games.

  • When you know you are moving contact a mover as soon as possible. Have enough time at your disposal to plan and arrange everything.
  • Consider using a full service moving company. You might be tempted to move on your own but sometimes when you add up the cost of packing supplies and the time you used searching for everything you need, hiring people to do the loading and unloading, renting a truck, paying for the gas, etc. it may come out to be more than it would have been if you had hired full service movers.

  • In order to find out the approximate costs for moving you should first get a few quotes. It is possible to know more by contacting movers. Ask them what services they offer and what is the cost of them.  Only use reliable moving companies with insurance and a good reputation. Once you know how much a moving company charges you can estimate which is cheaper for you – self move or using a moving company’s services.
  • Get plenty of rest before the moving day. Moving your house can be exhausting – There are a lot of things to do.
  • If you are moving at a short distance make sure to check your new home to see if everything works properly. If there are some repair works that need to be made take care of that before you move in. You can also use the opportunity to walk around the neighborhood and get to know the area!
  • And don’t forget – last but not least – enjoy it! Moving may not always be that easy but it is definitely a change and an opportunity to start a new life so take it as an adventure that is worth it!
